Kaduna Govt confirms 16 new COVID-19 cases April 30, 20205

The Kaduna State Ministry of Health has confirmed 16 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, raising the number to 25.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Mohammed-Baloni, said on Thursday that the new cases were the Quranic education pupils (Almajri) who came to the state from Kano.

Mohammed-Baloni said that they were tested positive to COVID-19 from sample of 40 people whose test results were released on Thursday.

“These latest cases have raised the number of active COVID-19 cases in Kaduna State from nine to 25.

“The high numbers of positive results from persons with travel history from outside the state, confirms the Kaduna State Government’s fears.

“The state government had expressed fear about the danger of infection from neighbouring states, and the role of interstate travel in facilitating the spread of COVID-19 across state lines,” she said.

The commissioner said one of the 17 cases announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) was a repeat test from an existing patient, and we have drawn their attention to it and it would be rectified.

“As part of the implementation of the preventive measures, our health officials are monitoring suspected COVID-19 cases, believed to have sneaked into the state in spite of the ban on interstate travels.

“The Ministry of Health wishes to draw attention to the appeal made by the State Standing Committee on COVID-19 to security agencies to accelerate the blocking of entry points into the state.

“Effective enforcement of the prohibition of entry into Kaduna State as outlined in the Quarantine Orders is clearly a key success factor in efforts to avert the nightmare scenario of community transmission.

“We wish to draw the attention of the public to the provisions of the Quarantine Orders and the penalties for any willful contravention,” the commissioner said.

She appealed to the public to be vigilant and kindly report returnees from states with high infection rates by contacting officials of the ministry.

Mohammed-Baloni also encouraged such persons to contact the ministry officials so that they could be monitored, saying that failure to do so might make such persons liable to the processes prescribed for violators in the quarantine orders.

“The Ministry of Health welcomes the approval granted by the Kaduna State Government for the payment of Occupational Safety Incentives to our frontline health workers as well as the provision of enhanced life and disability insurance packages,” she said.

The commissioner reminded the public of the importance of handwashing, personal hygiene, social distancing and the avoidance of large gatherings in helping to protect us all from COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is important to stay home, stay safe and save lives,” she added.

‘Lockdown affecting Ramadan sales’

Some food vendors in Lagos metropolis yesterday lamented the shortfalls in their sales during the Ramadan. According to them, many people who patronised the food vendors did not show up to buy food for Iftar (breaking of fast) and Sahur (early hour meal). The Nation also observed that not many food sellers engage in the brisk business this year. Usually, between 3am and 6:30am, the streets of Lagos are busy with food vendors preparing dishes. Many men who don’t have wives at home patronise the food vendors. The food vendors are also the toast of some couples, who find it difficult to wake up in the early hours to cook. Mrs Folasade Ayoola, who sells food on Lagos Island, said she had been incurring debts due to wastage of the meals. “We bought foodstuff and pepper at a higher price in the market, hoping to make good sales from those who are fasting, but the reverse is the case. People are not forthcoming like the previous Ramadan,” she said. According to her, some of t...

All Aboard..! Steering Nigeria’s COVID-19 Action Train

The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Nigeria on the 27th of February 2020. Just a little over two months ago and, yet, it feels like a lifetime has elapsed. The world we lived in then, is so much different from the one we are about to be released into, as the lockdown restrictions are lifted. When the lockdown was announced by President Muhammadu Buhari on the 27th of March, there were 65 confirmed cases in the country and the President’s Chief of Staff had just tested positive for the virus. Today, we have confirmed over 2000 cases, and many of our beloved fellow citizens (more than 50) are no longer with us, having fallen in the wake of this novel coronavirus. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and to those of us who remain on the journey of life, may God grant wisdom. We need it, desperately, at this time to navigate the complexities ahead. The month we spent sheltering in place was, without question, challenging; but in our isolation there was an odd sort of t...

The England international, who is yet to win any silverware at Tottenham, has scored 181 goals in 278 matches for Spurs over the past six seasons. “The final step for me was joining Man United, and I knew I would be making people disappointed, especially Tottenham fans, but I was following my own path,” Berbatov told the Football Daily podcast. “I knew if I missed that chance, another one might not come. “This is how it is in football. Sometimes you need to make tough decisions. “The same exact situation is happening with Harry Kane at the moment. “He is in the s...
